Surrounded by the mountains of Arada and Montemuro, the Carvalhal termal baths are located at about 500m of altitude, between the hydrographic basins of the rivers Paiva and Vouga.

Knowing the therapeutic properties of these waters since Roman times, their exploration for medicinal purposes only began in the early 20th century. These sulfurous waters with a high pH (9.3) have specialized therapeutic characteristics for skin, musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory and otorhinolaryngology diseases. The water is captured at about 44.4 ° C, through a vertical hole 62 meters deep.

In the classic thermalism they offer a varied range of treatments such as massages, hydromassages, showers, immersion baths, short waves and aerosols. In the wellness area, the treatments are focused on relaxation and perfect harmony between body and mind.

This beach is located on the right bank of the Paiva River, about 4km from the village of Castro Daire.

In this place, the waters of the Paiva River are calm, inviting you to take a refreshing dip and practice activities such as rowing, kayaking, sport fishing and trips on non-motorized boats.

Just after the river beach, there are large rectangular stones, called poldras, which are a traditional and rudimentary way of crossing the river.

Praia Fluvial da Folgosa is equipped with changing rooms, bar / terrace, picnic area with tables, benches and grills, sports park, and accessibility for adventure sports.

At one of the highest points of the Montemuro mountain, on the border between the municipalities of Castro Daire and Cinfães, are the ruins of the Portas do Montemuro Wall, an archaeological site, already mentioned in the 13th century, where there are traces of a fortified settlement of the Iron Age.

Portas do Montemuro are also a geosite of high geomorphological interest, located approximately 1213 meters above sea level. This is a magnificent point of observation, both for the morphology and landscapes of the Montemuro mountain, and for the surrounding morpho-structural complexes, with emphasis on the fracture valley of the Bestança river.

On clear days it is possible to get a privileged view over the north and center of mainland Portugal: to the north of the Douro river, it’s possible to apreciate the Gerês and Marão mountains and the houses along the banks of this river. On the south of the Douro direction, the entire valley of Bestança River, where villages such as Alhões, Bustelo da Laje and Granja are located. To the south of the Vouga river we can see the Caramulo and Estrela mountains. To the south of the Paiva River we can see the Gralheira Massif and to the north the village of Faifa.

The Castro Daire church is dedicated to S. Pedro, and is located on a hill overlooking the Paiva River, where the robust castro that gave birth to the village was born.

The current church is the result of an eighteenth century rebuilding that continued until the century. XIX and that focused not only on architecture, but also on the decorative structure, which has several altarpieces of national style carving and a facade of neoclassical style.

The majestic temple is formed by two main buildings, with annexes on the north side of the Sacristy and other facilities and a niche in the Way of the Cross.

The interior space reveals the long process of construction of the temple. The church has eight altars, of different styles. One of them has characteristics that indicate that it could be authored by Nicolau Nasoni.

The chancel stands out in the coffered ceiling with gilded panels; a national style altarpiece with splendid images; and six large mannerist paintings on canvas, suspended over the rococo carved chair that runs along the side walls.

The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria da Ermida de Riba Paiva is a remarkable monument from the second half of the century. XII.

Also known as “Temple of Siglas”, given the amount of enigmatic medieval signs engraved on the building's interior and exterior stonework.

Next to the church, the ruins of a monastery are still visible.

Located in the heart of the Paiva valley, the Romanesque Church of the Ermida, has simple but robust architectural lines and stands out in the green and bucolic landscapes of the Paiva River, composing a scenario of extraordinary beauty.
