The thermal baths of S. Pedro do Sul has been explored since the first century of our era. It has been more than 2,000 years to prove the healing properties of these mineral-medicinal waters.

In these spas the Romans built a Balneum (what remains of it today is a National Monument), on whose ruins D. Afonso Henriques ordered to build the spa and, much later (in 1894), new thermal structures were created beside it.

Enjoying a sulphurous water that sprouts at 68.7ºC, the spa of S. Pedro do Sul has excellent technical and human resources and magnificent facilities, equipped with the latest technology in the area of balneotherapy, being today considered one of the most modern in Europe and where many ills continue to heal.

The thermal baths of S. Pedro do Sul grew and modernized, being today the most frequented in the country and affirming itself, at the same time, as a tourism center that combines health, pleasure, sport and leisure, in a an area with ample natural and cultural resources, with leisure areas, a museum center and an auditorium, where various shows are organized.

The Vouga ecotrail connects S. Pedro do Sul to the Thermal Baths on a 3km course and where the contact with nature is an amazing experience.

In this eco-trail you will cross two admirable bridges with great historical and patrimonial value involved in a bucolic landscape.

Enjoy a walk on the Vouga Ecotrail, an old railway line, where the natural landscape along the fresh waters of the Vouga River transmits health and well-being.

In the municipality of S. Pedro do Sul, nature is really a great experience In its territory there are 3 mountains (Arada, Gralheira and S. Macário).

Here, the landscape and nature, take us back to the beginnings of our human memory in the world. Green valleys that contrast with rough and bare landscapes, allowing you to imagine the ancestral tectonic movements that defined the planet's surface.

It is possible to find trails that take us to the imagination of tropical forests, with waterfalls, lush and unknown flora. Trails that run along the banks of rivers and streams, such as Vouga, Sul or Paiva, with clear and fresh waters, which make us dream, to be back to our first steps on Earth. It is not paradise, but sometimes it seems to be.

It is one of the most important and well-preserved Roman thermal complexes of Portugal, with continuous use over 2000 years and which has always been a major factor in regional development.

The initial construction of the Balneum is the responsibility of the Romans, and it was done in two phases: a first construction phase in the 1st century DC. And a 2nd phase, at the end of the same century.

The archeology works show us swimming pools, drains, columns, shafts and capitals, epigraphic gravestones, coverings and constructions.

The Roman Spa is open for visits every day.
