The small village of Caramulo was born in 1921, on the southern face of the mountain with the same name, the result of the initiative of a doctor, Jerónimo de Lacerda who created the largest sanatorium in the Iberian Peninsula.

In the fifties, his sons, Abel and João de Lacerda, founded, a unique museum.

Abel de Lacerda, passionate about art, builds a building, with the most modern concepts of museology, to exhibit an unusual collection of art objects consisting of 500 pieces of painting, sculpture, furniture, ceramics and tapestries, ranging from ancient Egypt to Picasso.

João de Lacerda, passionate about cars, builds another building attached to the first, designed to exhibit 100 cars and motorcycles, under the principle that all vehicles could easily go out, for exhibition and conservation.

With the premature death of Abel de Lacerda in 1957, the Abel de Lacerda Foundation was created - now the Abel Foundation and João de Lacerda - owner of the Caramulo Museum.

Open to the public all year, the Caramulo Museum has received over one and a half million visitors since its creation.

The 18th century was decisive for the temple of invocation to Nossa Senhora do Campo. The seventeenth century construction will have been expanded, and its interior dignified through gilded structures and paintings.

The commitment of the Third Order of Nossa Senhora Carmo, which has been present since 1723, was decisive in this work.

The surface of the panels is irregular and the flat areas have been used to make the engravings. These are concentrated and their number is approximately one hundred.

The predominant motifs are podomorphs, horseshoes, circles and "fossettes". The footprints seem to have been executed using human feet, shoes and bare feet as a model, through the perforation, the main technique used.

The construction period dates from the Bronze Age.

The Dão Railway was one of the first narrow gauge railwaysin Portugal, and was opened on 25 November 1890.

Starting at the Santa Comba Dão station, where the Beira Alta Railway intersected, the Dão Line passed through Tondela, crossing the lands of the Dão, until to reach the Viseu station in a total length of 49.2 km. From here, it connected the Vouga Railway which would establish the connection to Aveiro interconnecting with the Northern Railway.

In August 1972, the goods service was suspended, and the Dão Railway was completely closed on September 25, 1988. Between 1997 and 1999 the rails were lifted, as well as the ballast and sleepers and all the built heritage was also abandoned.

The Dão Ecotrack was developed along the old Dão Railway, in an extension of 49.2 km and crosses the municipalities of Viseu, Tondela and Santa Comba Dão.

This infrastructure is part of the National Ecotracks Network that will articulate other green corridors for the promotion of nature tourism and cultural and landscape touring.

At the end of the Campo de Besteiros - Caramulinho Epic Climb it’s easy to find the access to the viewpoint of Caramulinho summit.

Located at 1075 meters of altitude, it is the highest point of the Caramulo mountain and to get there from the end of the road you have to climb 284 steps. But the views are the best reward for all the effort. In addition to Serra da Estrela, Serra de Montemuro and many other mountains, on clear days it is possible to see the ocean.
